When you first set up an email address you will find that it is an easy way to communicate with people. An email is a system for sending and receiving messages electronically over a computer network. Over time you will begin to develop email that is unwanted peddling everything from get-rich schemes to enhancements for body parts. But what can be done about it? Below are some tips for you to fight off spam.

  • Never respond to unsolicited email. Spammers will use your reply, even your unsubscribe message, as evidence that the email address is valid.
  • Never buy anything advertised in spam.  Most of it is fraudulent anyway and successful sales only encourage the practice to continue.
  • Never post your email address publicly on the web.  Spammers have ways to collect and use these email addresses.
  • Always opt-out of company solicitations you do not want.  What this means is pay special attention to checked boxes that ask for the right to share the email address for them to contact you.
  • Don’t use a short email address like bob@ or toms@  it will receive more spam than longer, less common, or more complex email addresses would.
  • Use disposable email addresses like a free hotmail or yahoo account. For example, when you order or purchase an item and it asks for an email address insert your free email account that way all spam is more contained to that email address instead of your main email address.
  • Send email in a blind carbon copy (bcc), the mechanism is the same, but the bcc’ed person’s name does not appear on the recipient list– hence the word blind.  To send an email bcc you select New Message and select cc and select their email address out of the address book and click bcc then click ok. The email will then show that person’s name under bcc.
  • When you forward an email that you have received from a friend... be kind and clean up [remove] the other email addresses of the people who also were on the recipient list of this email. Don’t forward a joke that displays 25-50 other email addresses.  That email will eventually end up in the mailbox of someone who will SELL those email addresses to a spammer.
